The Jacksonville Jaguars
were very close to the Super Bowl, a situation that should embarrass the AFC South. Even Tennessee titans players could not disagree.
It is just unfortunate and sad that a team that is led by the incompetent Blake Bortles can emerge victorious in a division, two playoff games and even fiercely compete with the New England Patriots
in Foxborough. They came so close to participating in a favorite game that most people would love their team to participate in.
The rest of the AFC South should be happy that Kirk Cousins was not pursued by Jacksonville. This is because a quarterback like him joining the AFC South would not be a good move since he throws for 4000 yards as well as 25 touchdown on a regular basis. Especially for a team with such a defense.
The Jaguars decided to extend Blake Bortles contract and by doing so they doomed themselves to be irrelevant for much longer. However, this was good news in the ears of Tennessee Titans
, Houston Texans
and Indianapolis Colts.
This means that any quarterback who wanted an opportunity in 2017 could have got one, it just depends on how badly he wanted it.
Let’s hope that 2018 will be good to Marcus Mariota by Andrew Luck and Deshaun Watson remaining healthy. This will make the AFC South very unpredictable and entertaining.
However, this begs the question on who among the 4 quarterbacks is the best.
We can break down the analysis into 3 portions:
The most dangerous? This is a quality that separates elite quarterbacks from the very good ones. Those who qualify in this category are Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady. The same cannot be said about Russell Wilson who is too putrid. Hall of famers like Matt Ryan, Eli Manning (gross) or Ben Roethlisberger do not qualify except Cam Newton if it were not for his inconsistency.
There is no quarterback from the AFC South that currently makes that list.
Andrew Luck would have qualified but his injuries did not allow him. The same goes for Deshaun Watson but he had a random tare of his ACL. Both Blake Bortles and Marcus Mariota are not close to that level.
With regard to Watson and Luck, Watson is much better. This is because of what he was able to achieve in 6 starts and 7 games.
Quarterback with the most to work with? Tennessee Titans
and Indianapolis Colts are eliminated out rightly in this comparison.
Jacksonville have the edge when we compare Jaguars and Texans. This is because they have better players on all aspects i.e. running backs, tight ends, wide receivers, offensive line etc. Receiver Allen Robinson and Leonard Fournette are beasts hence qualify here. The same goes for solid complimentary pieces Marquise Lee and Allen Hurns.
No.1 overall pick? Andrew Luck wins here hands down despite the challenges he has had.
Turnovers and injuries? Luck started all sixteen games in his first 3 seasons. He missed 16 in 2017, 1 in 2016 and 9 in 2015.
Deshaun Watson is not known to be one to shy away from making big plays. However, he also has his downsides because he missed 7 games and was reckless in decision making. He need to pull up his socks before he is ranked as being the top 5 quarterbacks.
He is just super human, be it accuracy or mobility. This is why he might become the most clutch player in the NFL even after playing poorly in the 4th quarter in his first and second season. However, he played well in his 3rd season through touchdowns and interceptions but if he wants to be the best in the division he needs to improve.
The final ranking is Andrew Luck, Deshaun Watson, Marcus Mariota and Blake Bortles in descending order.
