NFL Analyst Expects Titans to Contend Next Season
The Tennessee Titans finished second in the AFC South last season, but made the playoffs as a Wildcard team, defeating the Kansas City Chiefs in the first round before losing to the New England Patriots in the Divisional round of the playoffs.
Thanks to their success last year, the Tennessee Titans odds to win the Super Bowl next season is very favorable.
With the start of training camp only a few weeks away, NFL analyst Charles Davis says he expects to see a lot of good things from the Titans next season. According to Davis, it all starts with head coach Mike Vrabel, who was hired after the team parted ways with Mike Mularkey after last season.
Davis said he believes Vrabel is the right fit for the Titans because he was a great linebacker for the New England Patriots as a player and has championship pedigree, having won multiple Super Bowls with New England. Davis believes Vrabel will improve the team because he will have the respect of the players.
Another reason Davis believes the Titans will be very successful this season is the team’s addition of Matt LaFleur, who was hired as their new offensive coordinator. LaFleur had a lot of success in his first season as the offensive coordinator of the Los Angeles Rams, and is credited for the improvement of Rams quarterback Jared Goff last season. The Rams finished last season averaging 29.9 points per game, which helped them make win the NFC West and make their return to the playoffs.
Davis expects Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota to improve this season because he will have LaFleur to help him improve his mechanics and put him in situations he will flourish in. He also expects draft picks Rashaan Evans and Harold Landry to have breakout seasons because they have a lot to prove this year.
Davis said the Titans win over the Chiefs in the playoffs last year shows that they are no longer a team on the rise, but a team that is trying to take the next step, which is to compete for the Super Bowl. With Vrabel and LaFleur on board, the Titans offense and defense will look very different next season, and he expects them to be more exciting to watch than they were under Mularkey.
Even though Davis expects the Titans to compete for the AFC South title next season, he doesn’t expect it to be easy because the division will be very tough. The Jacksonville Jaguars, who won the division last season, still have one of the best defenses in the NFL. If quarterback Blake Bortles plays as well as he did last season and running back Leonard Fournette stays injury free, the Jaguars will be tough to take down.
The Indianapolis Colts will have Andrew Luck back next season after sitting out the 2017 season with a shoulder injury, which will make the Colts another team the Titans have to worry about. The Houston Texans are another team that will be expected to compete for the division crown next season because they will have a healthy Deshaun Watson back in the lineup as well as a healthy J.J. Watt, which makes them another contender the Titans have to deal with.
